| IDW Brings Grimm Interpretations | |
 | IDW Publishing reminds readers that their favorite bedtime stories
often harbored more frightening things than big bad wolves and child-
eating witches in its Grimm’s Fairy Tales HC, a graphic re-presentation
of selected tales written by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm.
Through centuries of retelling in various formats ranging from
prose to film – as well as in numerous comics – the stories of the
Brothers Grimm have thrilled and fascinated millions of readers of all
ages. (National Geographic estimates that they have been translated into
more than 160 languages.) However, people are continually surprised to
learn that the brothers’ original, often violent stories were never
intended for children. This new volume should entice older readers
seeking to explore the dark roots and sometimes difficult lessons of the
original versions, which are rendered with contemporary illustrations by
artist Kevin Colden, whose work on the acclaimed Fishtown (HC:
SEP084143E, $19.99) earned him an Eisner Award nomination in 2009, along
with a strong following that should turn out to see his bold
interpretations of these classics.
The 200-page, partial-color hardcover is slated to ship on
September 29.
| | Skullkickers Opens Fire on Fantasy Traditions | |
 | Two mercenaries become entangled in a sinister plot, but even that
can’t come between them and their fee as writer Jim Zubkavich and
artists Chris Stevens, Edwin Huang, & Misty Coats cut loose with Image
Comics’ Skullkickers #1, the start of a riotous fantasy action comedy.
Fans of offbeat horror-adventures like Army of Darkness and fans
of tabletop fantasy combat games should prove to be eager audiences for
Skullkickers. Described by Zubkavich as being “about fun characters and
wild adventure, with witty banter thrown in to keep it all clipping
along at a healthy pace,” the title opens with “One Thousand Opas and a
Dead Body.” In it, readers meet two ornery troublemakers, whose origins
are unknown but whose duty is clear: cut their way through any obstacles
– be they werewolves, skeletons, or black magic spells – to pick up
their promised cash.
The 32-page, full-color book is solicited to ship with two 50/50
covers by Stevens on September 22. For every 10 copies ordered,
retailers will receive one for free. [To give consumers an advance taste
of Skullkickers, direct them to Popgun, Volumes 2 (MAY082176D, $29.99)
and 3 (JAN092368D, $29.99).]

| | Mignola Reassembles His Amazing Screw-On Head | |
 | Dark Horse Comics collects the hilarious – and Eisner Award-
winning – misadventures of a hero from a different corner of Hellboy
creator Mike Mignola’s fertile imagination with The Amazing Screw-On
Head and Other Curious Objects HC.
One of Mignola’s best-loved creations, The Amazing Screw-On Head
garnered attention outside of the comic industry with a cult-favorite,
animated short film starring the voices of Paul Giamatti, David Hyde
Pierce and Patton Oswalt. Fans of the movie, and of Mignola’s many other
works, can now learn how President Abraham Lincoln enlisted the
mechanical Screw-On Head and his oddball associates, Mr. Groin and Mr.
Dog, to save Earth from the machinations of Emperor Zombie. Filled with
Victorian flying machines, tombs to be robbed, and weird alien menaces
to be thwarted, it’s pure mayhem – and pure Mignola, with colors by Dave
Stewart!
Collecting the original Amazing Screw-On Head one-shot, the short
story “The Magician and the Snake,” and nearly 50 pages of new Mignola
material available nowhere else, the 104-page, full-color volume is set
to ship on August 25.
| | DC, WildStorm Explore Realms of Telara | |
 | Trion World Network’s Rifts: Planes of Telara has generated
serious buzz amongst fans of massively multiplayer online role-playing
games since it was announced at the Electronic Entertainment Expo in
2009. Now, DC Comics and WildStorm Productions offer a closer look at
the game’s conflict-ridden worlds in Telara Chronicles #1, the start of
a four-issue limited series.
Anticipation for Telara is running high with gamers, thanks in
part to being featured on the 2009 Spike TV Video Game Trailers program,
Combined with WildStorm’s track record for successfully translating
games into comics – including Dante’s Inferno (TP: MAR100285D, $19.99),
God of War and Resident Evil – this excitement should deliver curious
prospective players to the comic. Writer Rick Sanchez and artist Pop
Mhan begin by introducing the champions of Telara, a world ravaged by
invaders pouring through tears in the magical veil protecting it from
the outer planes. And one of Telara’s heroes, mystical warrior Asha
Catari, must choose between preserving the past or embracing a bold, new
future.
Featuring a cover by Mico Suayan, the 32-page, full-color debut
issue is scheduled to ship on September 22.
